Boston, MA, January 31, 2011 – Boston.com has introduced a new online destination dedicated to providing readers with the latest news and information on health, fitness, nutrition, the medical industry, and more. Health & Wellness is now live at www.boston.com/health

Today a new feature of the site debuts: a weekly Globe-produced health video hosted by health reporter Stephen Smith.  Every Monday, Smith and a Boston Medical Center doctor tackle a health topic. Sometimes they will focus on that day’s cover story in the Globe’s ‘g’ section, which also features health and wellness news and information. They may also discuss other current health topics; for instance, how to treat flu and other wintertime respiratory illnesses.  The two- to three-minute videos will be available online every Monday morning.

Another primary feature of the new section is the Daily Dose blog, in which reporter Deborah Kotz offers readers consumer health news and timely advice from Boston-area medical experts.  Recent topics include how to prevent falling on ice, sleepy surgeons, exercises for long plane trips, and whether echinacea is effective in fighting colds.  Highlights from the blog are printed in the Globe’s Monday ‘g’ section.

Readers can also subscribe for free to a weekly Health & Wellness e-mail newsletter, “Be Well, Boston,” with highlights from the week’s health news and Daily Dose posts, and a calendar of upcoming health events.

“Boston is home to a medical community known around the world for its expertise, as well as to a population that cares deeply about health issues,” said Boston Globe Health and Science Editor Gideon Gil. “In one place, readers will find everything they need to know to stay well and, if they are sick, to help them weigh the best treatment. We look forward to engaging with our readers every day.”

Reader comments are highlighted on the Health & Wellness site, and readers can also participate in discussion boards on current topics and live chats with local doctors and other experts. Also featured is theWhite Coat Notes blog, which will focus on news and happenings in the Boston-area medical community.

The site aggregates pertinent content from The Boston Globe and Boston.com, such as nutrition stories from the food section and op-ed columns on health care policy. Health & Wellness also links to other health resources and blogs from across the web, and provides listings of local health events.
Health & Wellness will continue to grow in coming months, with plans to add reader-submitted photos and videos; an Ask Our Experts feature; subsections on topics such as preventive care, drugs and treatments, and women’s health; and a directory of health care providers.
