WCVB-TV CHANNEL 5 BOSTON HONORED WITH SEVEN NATIONAL HEADLINER AWARDS FOR ITS OVERALL EXCELLENCE IN NEWS COVERAGE
Boston (April 2, 2014) – WCVB-TV Channel 5 has won seven National Headliner Awards, winning top marks, including two first-place finishes, in more categories than any other local television broadcaster in the country. Presented by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the annual contest recognizes journalistic merit across the communications industry.
Channel 5 was the only New England television station to be honored in this year's 80th annual awards. WCVB received first place honors in the Newscast category for its coverage of last year's attack on the Boston Marathon, as well as in the Coverage of Live Breaking News Event category for its coverage of the 'Watertown Capture' of one of the Marathon bombers.
"WCVB is honored to be nationally recognized from among our peers with the National Headliner awards," said WCVB President and General Manager Bill Fine. "We dedicate ourselves to providing the best, most comprehensive news coverage to our viewers on a daily basis. This year, the Boston Marathon bombing certainly tested our mettle and ability to cover an event in real time with urgency and accuracy. I am extremely proud of the work we have collectively accomplished," continued Fine.
"It is gratifying for the entire WCVB team to be recognized for their efforts, especially amidst circumstances that required them to go above and beyond the call of duty," commented Andrew Vrees, WCVB News Director. "We are proud of not only the record number of commendations we received this year, but also the wide range of categories in which we were recognized --from Newscast, to Human Interest Story to our online presence."
In addition to its six broadcast awards, WCVB's website won a second place award in the National Headliner’s Awards "Television-affiliated website" category. This category is inclusive of both the major national networks as well as local television broadcasters.
This comes on the heels of WCVB being honored earlier this week with the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation's "Service to the Community" award for its efforts in assisting the Boston community in the wake of last year's Boston Marathon bombings. In addition, the station was recognized in February with a Gracie Award for its special "Boston Strong: Reunited."
WCVB was acknowledged in the following categories:
Broadcast or cable television stations
“Newscenter 5 at 11 p.m.: Attack on the Boston Marathon”
“Newscenter 5 at 11 p.m.: April 21, 2013”
Broadcast or cable television stations coverage of a live breaking news event
Broadcast or cable television stations feature, sports or human interest story
“Band of Brothers”

Monahan, brought together survivors and first responders for the first time on television to share their personal trials and triumphs. Executive produced by Jennifer Berryman.
